- Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG)
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), London
- In the 1990s, worked in the UK as a Registrar at both a District General Hospital (Wycombe General) and a London Teaching Hospital (Guys and St Thomas’)
- Following postgraduate specialist training in New Zealand and the United Kingdom, has practiced continuously as a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in New Zealand and Australia since 1997
Comprehensive Obstetric Experience
Dr. Buist provides pregnancy and birth care to low and high-risk pregnant women and is experienced in all aspects of care provided in maternity units, including:
- Outpatient management including the interpretation of laboratory tests and ultrasound studies
- Inpatient management including the services of the Delivery/Birthing Unit and the Operating Theatre (OT)
- Team based high risk medical obstetric care involving anaesthetists, physicians, and other medical professionals
- Appropriate interdisciplinary collaboration with non-medical professionals including midwifery colleagues
- Supervision and teaching of Junior Medical Officers in Obstetrics
- Management of maternal, obstetric, and neonatal emergencies
Clinical practice has always been focused almost entirely on low and high-risk maternity care, with a comparatively limited gynaecology practice. Dr. Buist does not provide medicolegal opinions on gynaecology matters.
In private practice, Dr. Buist has cared for approximately 180 pregnant women per year since 2005. When combined with public obstetric work, he has conservatively performed well over 5,000 births.
Clinical Leadership
Over the course of his career, Dr. Buist has held several clinical leadership roles at service, hospital, district, and national levels. A key focus of all those roles has been leading the provision of high-quality maternity (and other health) services.
Dr. Buist has led the auditing and improvement of maternity outcomes at local, regional, and trans-Tasman levels.
His clinical reputation is exemplary and he has never had any adverse findings made against him by any authorities, nor has he had his clinical privileges withdrawn from any hospital.
Current Clinical Knowledge
Dr. Buist is — and always has been – up to date with his clinical RANZCOG Continuing Professional Development (CPD), including:
- Ongoing participation in regular Morbidity and Mortality (M and M) reviews and meetings
- Frequent attendances at conferences and courses at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, London
- Completion of the Advancing in Maternity Safety (Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics) Course in 2018
- Completion of the UK based K2 CTG Education Programme in January 2022
- Completion of the RANZCOG Fetal Surveillance Education Programme June 2024
- Currency in adult and neonatal resuscitation
Dr. Buist is regularly involved in the reviewing of significant maternal and newborn morbidity (“near miss”) cases at Prince of Wales Private Hospital, Sydney.
Medicolegal Qualifications
- Has been providing medicolegal opinions since 2000
- Completed the Inspire Medilaw Expert Witness Training in Oxford, United Kingdom in June 2023
- Appointed as a Clinical Advisor — Peer Level by the New South Wales Healthcare Complaints Commission (HCCC) in July 2023
- Regularly reviews cases for the NSW HCCC
- Made an Expert Reviewer for the NSW HCCC in February 2024
- Added to the RANZCOG Expert Witness Register in April 2024 having met the requirements of that Register
- Familiar with the United Kingdom Civil Procedure Rules 35
- Appropriately qualified to provide medicolegal opinions and appear in Court in the United Kingdom
- As a prostate cancer survivor, has had first-hand experience as a patient in the health system
Practice Locations
Dr. Buist is in ongoing active clinical practice in Obstetrics. He provides antenatal, intrapartum (labour and birth) and postnatal care to women on a continuous basis. In conjunction with the women concerned, he makes decisions about the timing and mode of birth of babies in both emergency and non-urgent situations on at least a weekly basis (annual or study leave aside). He conducts those births personally.
His office is in Bondi Junction, Sydney and he delivers babies at:
- Prince of Wales Private Hospital, Randwick
- The Mater Hospital in North Sydney
